Happy
Chinese New Year
By Doug Bowbeer
“Be happy” was the slogan adopted by smiling and friendly Yet Keen
seniors as they converged on the Oriental Chu Shing Restaurant at 11:30am
February 26, 2015.
Approximately 160 Yet Keen Seniors’ Day Centre members, their
families, friends, community partners and guests gathered to celebrate the
Chinese New Year, the Year of the Sheep. The guest in attendance included
Catherine McKenney, Councilor of City of Ottawa, Jack McCarthy, Executive
Director of the Somerset West Community Health Centre, Eugene Williams, Manager
of the Somerset West Community Health Centre and Cory Mayville, Executive
Director of Bronson Centre.
Everyone enjoyed a traditional oriental lunch and all the while
being entertained by local talent. First up was an instrumental arrangement
played on the piano, with accompaniment on the Erhu, a Chinese musical instrument.
This was followed by lovely ladies in colorful dress dancing to traditional
Chinese music.
Around 15 members over the age of 85 were recognized and honored
with warm applause. A fitting comment was made that the total number of years
of the club members exceeded 10,000 years of life, good health, happiness, and
wisdom. The celebration continued a 4 instruments and singing jam session
coined “the Yet Keen Symphony”.
The party ended with a draw for many exceptional prizes followed
by the Fortune god making a surprise appearance to bestow his blessings and
good fortune on everyone, and distributing of gift bags to everyone.
Special thanks to Giant Tiger for their generous support of this function
and to all the individual supporters.
